About Lunaway

A free map of places to stop with a motorhome or a van, built on open data and on its own community.

The project

Lunaway helps you find where to stop with a motorhome or a van: service areas, car parks, campsites, farm stays, spots in nature, water and dump points. France is covered in detail, and the app is designed for the whole world, in French and English.

The app is free, with no ads and no trackers, and we sell no data. It is published by AxiomTeam, and its code is free software.

It is made of a Flutter app (Android and web today, iPhone and computers next), an API written in Rust on PostgreSQL and PostGIS, and servers of our own, at Hetzner in Germany, which also serve the basemap. Each place gathers what several sources say about the same spot, and keeps, for each piece of information, the source that supplied it.

Sources and attributions

Lunaway uses only open data and the contributions of its community. Every place shows its sources, with their licence, the original identifier and the date the data was fetched.

Lunaway imports no proprietary database of places, reviews or photos: their terms forbid reuse, and their reviews and photos belong to the people who wrote or took them. A producer who wishes to offer its data under a licence can write to us.

Licences

  • Code of the app, the server and this site: GNU AGPL-3.0-or-later.
  • Places database, new places and edits included: ODbL 1.0. It includes OpenStreetMap data, which makes it a derivative database published under the same licence.
  • Reviews and photos: CC BY 4.0, to be credited to their author's pseudonym.
  • Fonts of this site: Fraunces, by Undercase Type (SIL Open Font License 1.1), and Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, by the Braille Institute (SIL Open Font License 1.1), reduced to Latin characters. The second is the app's variant, with an unslashed zero.
  • Icons: Phosphor (MIT licence).

Contribute

  • In the app: rate a place, confirm it is "still there", report a problem, write a review, add a photo or a place. A new account can rate, confirm and report; reviews and photos open after three days and three confirmed places, adding places after two weeks and ten published contributions. These steps hold back spam without asking for an email.
  • In OpenStreetMap: a correction made on openstreetmap.org reaches Lunaway with the daily import, and helps every free map.
  • In the code: report a bug or suggest an improvement on GitHub.
